Dùng từ 'very'

NOTE:

  • Thông thường ta hay dùng 'very' để ám chỉ mức độ của trạng thái, hay một đặc tính nào đó, ví dụ: 'very big', 'very beautiful'.
  • Tuy nhiên, để hay hơn trong cách hành văn, ta nên tránh, và dùng các từ có ý nghĩa tương ứng

very afraid -> terrified
very angry -
> furious
very bad --> awful / atrocious (e.g. her manner was atrocious for a princess)
very beautiful > exquisite
very big -
> huge / immense
very bright -
-> dazzling
very clever —> brilliant
very clean -
> spotless
very cold -
-> freezing / frigid
very dirty -
> squalid
very dry -
> parched
very fierce -
-> ferocious
very good —> superb
very hot -
-> sweltering
very happy -
> jubilant / ecstatic
very hungry > ravenous
very large -
> colossal (e.g. it was a colossal undertaking but he was up to the task)
very lively -> vivacious (e.g. he led a vivacious life with no second wasted)
very loved -> adored
very neat -> immaculate
very poor --> destitute
very pretty —> gorgeous
very risky -
> perilous
very roomy -
-> spacious
very rude —> vulgar
very sad -
-> miserable
very serious —> solemn
very strong —> unyielding
very tasty -
> delicious
very thin -> gaunt
very ugly -
-> hideous
very valuable > precious
very weak -
> frail / feeble (e.g. the frail old lady; her feeble excuses could not convince)
